not quite such a perfect day

Sean and Casper ventured out early this morning in search of some interesting weather - inversions I think, but I'm not sure how successful they'll be as, although it's a lovely still day, there's lots of low cloud around. I'm stuck with today's task of trying to get a company interested in removing our rubbish. We have a weekly cardboard mountain that is a pain to store and then remove but no one seems willing to shift it for us. One big problem is that the shop is built into a hill and so has no rear access or storage for cages or bins. Despite paying over £1,200 a month in business rates, this doesn't cover any rubbish removal or recycling and I'm not getting anywhere with any local firms. Anybody got any bright ideas?

  1. Hi Louise, re your cardboard problem, I think you are going to struggle a bit with having nowhere to store it. We use 'Biffa' to recycle all the cardboard from the shopping centre, but we have to bale it and we get good revenue for it, but as you are producing a smaller amount I can understand the difficulty in getting someone interested in taking it. Is it not possible to join up with neighbouring businesses who may have storage where you could potentially then get some revenue between you all for your cardboard, just an idea!
Wish I was up on the fells with Sean and casper, instead of stuck in the office!!

  2. Hi Gary. Unfortunately, most of the businesses in our vicinity struggle with the same storage problem. Its ok for stores like Fat Face as they get their clothes delivered in large sacks. We've also got a couple of jewellers near us who produce minimal waste and the restaurants get their fresh waste collected daily. It looks like we're going to have to carry on taking it in our cars to the local tip - not ideal. We've just taken the dogs up to a Birkrigg where there's usually a fantastic view across to the mountains and Morecambe Bay, but there's fog everywhere today so you're not missing anything!

  3. Hi Louise,

Have you contacted the Cumbria Green Business Forum, I found them on the net at www.cgbf.co.uk they list a company that does free kerbside collections every few weeks in the Lakes and may cover your area.

The company is A G Bell ans Sons Tel: 01229 869876 or 07860 686 735. Alternatively do you have access to a good garden waste shredder if it's mainly cardboard and paper you could prbably shred this and provide the product to a local farm or stables, boarding kennels for bedding as such it may have an income or exchange value.
